There is a spiritual world. Some say that it exists in the same space as our physical world - that somehow, there is a parallel universe which we occupy following the death of our physical body.

The angels identify those humans in need of a miracle through a complex energy field which serves to guide them to the person in need. If that energy filed were to be disrupted, needy humans would be left defenseless to the destinies of the universe, and unable to call in the angels for re-enforcement.
